Should you have a bedtime routine with your hair? Yes, here's why.

Having a hair routine can make all the difference in your self care routine.

But if you don’t know where to start, I’d love to give you some tips!

The first thing I always tell my clients is to never fall asleep with wet hair, especially if you’re blonde or if your hair is damged. It’s better to either start your day with a wash then air dry throughout the day, rather than wash right before bed. Why this can be damaging to the hair is because our hair changes elasticity while it’s wet… then add sleeping, tangling, and laying on your hair.

Hair is weaker when it's soaking wet and if damage is present, the hair is even more much more vulnerable to breaking and snapping during sleep...

Here’s what I suggest. Don’t worry there’s options! I know each persons lifestyle can be different so its good to find a technique that feels easy for you!

If you wash in the mornings, try to lean into any natural texture your hair has. Also, with warmer weather on the way it makes it a lot easier to be comfortable while it's drying. This tip even works if you have a straight hair and choose to wear it that way, sometimes frizz can cause an issue so its important to use the right products for your hair type and texture. If you wash at night, just make sure to at least blow dry 80% before laying down to go to sleep.

Don’t have a blowdryer or rather not heatstyle? Maybe its time to try a heatless curling set…

Kitsch Satin Heatless Curling Set

If you can’t break up with sleeping with wet hair I suggest trying “no heat curls” because these accessories help keep your hair more in place, and less likely to snap. But remember you don’t want your hair soaking wet before starting this technique, just be more damp so you are able to manipulate the hair how you want.

One of my favorite healthy sleep hair hacks is buying a silk pillowcase, this is an easy way to keep your hair healthy and soft while you sleep.

ZIMASILK

The silk pillow case prevents tangling and matting that can make your hair fragile. Sleeping on silk is also really great for preventing wrinkles and drying out your skin. Also an added bonus is that silk is much more comfortable to sleep on, it keeps cool and lasts longer than cotton.

Keeping your hair in place while you sleep can make a world of difference and is EASY.

Silk Satin Scrunchies

Keeping a few soft no tension silk scrunchies on hand is another great and inexpensive way to keep your hair managed during sleep, and it can be a great way to maintain a heat style without having to reuse heat the next day.

If you are comfortable with braiding your hair, then it’s a great idea to put your hair in a braid at night to keep it from getting messy and tangled. You can create a really cute wave for the next day too !

Keep in mind that using the right products makes a huge difference too

I love putting in Young.Again oil from Kevin Murphy in my hair before bed to make sure my hair stays shiny, managed and moisturized.
